2023 KCSE, Thika High School shines and regains its lost grandeur.

Kiambu County’s Thika High School has restored its former glory after achieving exceptional results in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams held last year.

Of the 450 candidates who took the exams, 351 have met the requirements to become members of the university.

The school’s mean score increased to 7.93 in 2022 from 7.61 in 2022.

28 candidates received an A-, four candidates received an A plain, 69 boys received a B plus, 79 B stand, 87 B-, 84 C plus, 51 C stand, 33 C minus, and 11 D plus, and four candidates received a D stand.

Julius Muraya, the senior principal of the school, complimented the candidates’ and the teachers’ dedication and hard work for the exceptional accomplishment.

“We have managed to take 351 candidates to University and this is the biggest number of candidates that have managed to qualify for the higher learning institutions at a go. Hardwork and resilience by our boys has paid,”  Muraya said.

He noted that the school, which was established in 1956 by the Presbyterian Church of Eastern Africa (PCEA), has been an academic giant despite facing turbulence through the years.

The principal said that the school has produced high-ranking personalities, individuals of substance and people who hold high offices in diverse fields citing the current Public Service Cabinet Secretary and former Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria.

Muraya divulged that the school endeavors to provide access to quality education adding that the school has recently experienced a surge in students’ population.

“Our population has been growing immensely in the last few years.  This year [2024] we have some 482 candidates who will sit for their examinations and we hope they will record better results than this year’s,”  Muraya said.

He however revealed that the school is grappling with some challenges including inadequate infrastructure to conveniently handle the population calling on the Government to establish more schools in the region to ease the congestion.

He mentioned that the school plans to admit about 500 first-graders.

“We are however grateful for the support we have been receiving from our parents and even our sponsor, the PCEA Church,” he stated.

Clinton Mugama, who received a perfect score, credited his parents’ moral support and the encouragement of his professors for driving him to succeed.

Mugama expressed his excitement about studying aviation and realizing his goal of becoming a pilot.

Although Thika Girls Karibaribi is just six years old, the school has over a thousand pupils, according to principal Faith Wawira, who also mentioned that the large student body occasionally causes problems.

“To handle the increase of students last year, we turned the boardroom into a classroom and our dining hall into a hostel. Wawira stated, “But we are tackling the problem gradually and are hoping the government will assist in resolving the school’s infrastructure issues.

Francis Kuria, a member of the school board, urged the administration to think about building new schools nearby in order to ease the overcrowding in the existing ones.

Thika Girls’ Karibaribi Elizabeth Wangare took first place with a minus A.

She credited her accomplishment to perseverance and hard effort.

Wangare, a recipient of the Equity Bank Wings to Fly Scholarship, is eager to study medicine in order to save lives.

Wangare’s mother, Nancy Njoki, expressed her happiness at her daughter’s achievement and expressed hope that her daughter will improve the family, despite the difficulties of raising her seven siblings by herself.
