Agency Rolls Out CEMASTEA Training in 3 Counties

In order to effectively implement the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) in schools, an Agency by the name Centre for Mathematics Science Technology Education in Africa (CEMASTEA) has trained teachers in Junior Secondary Schools in a bid to enhance their ability.

The agency intends to train 9,595 teachers in Junior School who are teaching Pretechnical Studies, Agriculture and Nutrition on the pedagogical Content Knowledge that will guide them in ensuring 60% of the learners transition to Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) at senior School.

This training is meant to address the teaching gaps observed among teachers in interpreting the Curriculum Designs for grade 8 encouraging learner centred pedagogies.

These teachers are being trained on a number of subjects which include;

  • Inquiry Based Learning (IBL)
  • Innovative Teaching and Learning Activities
  • Lesson planning
  • Integration of ICT in Teaching
  • Enhancement of professional growth by enacting communities of practice
  • Rationalization of the implemented curriculum
  • Integration of mentorship and career guidance

These areas are meant to facilitate the interpretation of the grade 8 curriculum designs.

Beneficiaries of this training carried out in Kisumu, Machakos and Nakuru are expected to train other teachers in their respective counties.

Addressing the training, the Nyanza Regional Director Lawrence Karuntimi appreciated the training saying it was timely and it will aid in addressing issues surrounding pedagogical Content Knowledge. He further said in his speech read by Dickson Ogonya that this intervention will establish a solid foundation in the STEM subjects as stipulated in the new curriculum.

The Regional Director further said that the Ministry of Education was fully supporting the CEMASTEA Intervention geared towards solving inequities in STEM education giving learners equal opportunities in these areas. He further stated that the model being used during the training was pregnant hence ensuring all learners are engaged in the inclusive system.

“The use of learner-centred teaching and learning approaches such as problem-based, project-based, and inquiry-based pedagogies has been shown to equip learners for the dynamic world,” he said.

The Regional Director further indicated that the Ministry of Education was keen in integrating information Communication Technology (ICT) in Junior Secondary Schools.

“Integration of ICT, was set to create innovative learning experiences and, in turn, promote STEM education in the country,” he said.

“In the contemporary fast-paced digital era, the need to integrate technology into learning has become increasingly important in order to capture and sustain the attention span of the 21st century learner,” he said.
