Government postpones schools reopening to May this Dates.

The planned school reopening has been pushed back by the administration to Monday, May 6, 2024.

Ezekiel Machogu, the cabinet secretary for education, stated in a statement that they have information indicating certain institutions have suffered because of the continued flooding.

He explained that delaying the reopening was necessary because bringing staff and kids to the impacted institutions would endanger their lives.

“The devastation caused by the rains in certain schools is so great that it would be foolish to endanger the lives of students and faculty before installing impenetrable barriers to guarantee the proper safety of all impacted school communities.

“Based on this assessment, the Ministry of Education has resolved to postpone the reopening of all primary and secondary schools by one week, to Monday, May 6, 2024,” said Machogu.

On April 29 (today), schools were supposed to reopen.

The CS stated that in order to lessen the negative consequences of the rains, his Ministry will collaborate with pertinent organizations and stakeholders.

Additionally, he said, they will offer frequent updates on all advancements pertaining to the education sector.

The National Parents Association suggested on Sunday altering the start date of classes in the impacted areas.

With almost 90 deaths confirmed to date and several injuries or missing persons, the meteorological authority issued a warning about stronger rainfall in the upcoming days.

The association’s secretary general, Eskimos Kobia, stated that the rains and flooding have impacted tens of schools nationwide.

For the sake of the children’ and instructors’ safety, Kobia urged the administration to conduct an audit of the number of schools impacted by the rains and consider modifying the opening dates.

He stated, “We are closely observing the continuing rains and collaborating with the government to ensure the safety of the students as the schools reopen for the second term.”

Speaking in Naivasha, Kobia stated that disaster victims have set up camp in nearby schools in some of the areas severely impacted by the rains.

The secretary-general said that the heavy downpours had blocked off important highways, mostly in rural regions, endangering the lives of the students.

“How safe will it be for students to travel from their homes to the learning institutions? That is the real concern, not just the reopening of schools,” he stated.

According to Kobia, many of the impacted families had lost school supplies and uniforms, according to an early evaluation conducted by the association.
