KNEC Announces the Launch of Grade 9 Student Questionnaires.
The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) will begin distributing questionnaires to Grade 9 pupils in an effort to learn more about their interests and career paths as they move into senior school.
KNEC Chief Executive Officer David Njengere said in a statement on Thursday, December 19, that students would now be completing the questionnaires to help define their future in addition to the achievement exams that are now given at grade 9.
“Apart from achievement assessments, we will also administer a questionnaire to Grade 9 learners to explore their interests and other personal attributes that will speak to the kind of pathways and tracks that they will pursue in Senior School,” Njengere said.
The organization wants to make sure that a student only selects the career path they desire and that nothing is forced upon them.
At a stakeholder engagement on the implementation of competency-based education (CBE), the CEO was giving a speech.
Since teachers have been administering the School Based Assessments (SBAs) since 2019, Njengere urged the stakeholders to have faith in their capacity to do so.
“Since 2019, teachers have been administering these SBAs and I can assure you that we’ve been getting a normal curve, which shows that the teachers are very objective and professional,” Njengere said.
KNEC has invited a group of teachers to a session to acquaint them with the new national assessment formula as the nation prepares for the grade 9 evaluation the next year.
Last year, 235 schools took part in the Kenya Junior Secondary Education Assessment (KJSEA) pilot program, from which the teachers were selected.
A learner questionnaire is utilized to assess academic preferences and personality attributes, and the seminar’s goal is to get input from educators, school administrators, and students.
According to Anne Ngatia, Director of Research and Innovation at KNEC, “this assessment is a crucial tool for identifying each learner’s potential and guiding them toward a path that suits their interests and skills.”
KJSEA wants to have a big impact on how students choose to pursue their careers in the future. This action contributes to the larger objective of making sure that the educational system is better matched with the abilities, aptitudes, aspirations, and strengths of students.
Students will move on to Senior Secondary School (SSS) in grade 9, also referred to as Junior Secondary School, where they will choose their professional choice.
