TSC Unveils 24,000 Promotion Vacancies For Teachers Starting January 2025.

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has unveiled plans to promote 24,000 teachers in a nationwide initiative aimed at addressing staffing gaps and recognizing long-serving educators.

The promotions will be conducted in two phases, with the first phase targeting 5,690 teachers currently serving in acting capacities as school heads and deputies.

TSC CEO Nancy Macharia stated that while ads for the remaining 19,000 vacancies will be released in early 2025, applications for the first wave of promotions are now being processed.

This declaration was made at the Annual Delegates Conference of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), which took place in Mombasa.

The promotions are a component of TSC’s larger initiative to address the school leadership dilemma. There are 1,441 secondary schools without principals and 1,918 elementary schools without headteachers, according to data from the Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms.

Since many educators have been serving in these capacities for more than three years—far longer than the legally allowed six months—KNUT Secretary-General Collins Oyuu underlined the importance of filling these positions as soon as possible.

The revised strategy gives permanent appointments priority over the special duty allowances that TSC had initially suggested for acting school heads. Over 240,000 teachers were promoted by TSC between 2018 and 2023; 168,389 of them benefited from the Common Cadre system, while 73,902 received competitive promotions.

However, union officials are still advocating for the repeal of the 2017 Career Progression Guidelines (CPGs), arguing that they have prevented many teachers from advancing in their careers.

The criteria, according to KUPPET Chairman Omboko Milemba, are a major obstacle that prevents many seasoned educators from becoming eligible for important leadership positions.

This extensive marketing campaign demonstrates TSC’s dedication to bolstering school leadership while resolving persistent staffing issues.

By January 2025, teachers who have been chosen for promotion are supposed to start working in their new positions.
