To replace instructors who have departed the teaching profession due to natural attrition, the instructors Service Commission (TSC) will post a total of 6,000 replacement vacancies.
At the 64th Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) Annual Delegates Conference (ADC) held at Sheikh Zayed Hall in Mombasa, Macharia made the announcement and stated that the replacement would be carried out in accordance with the TSC code of regulations.
As more than 10,000 instructors reach mandatory retirement age and are scheduled to leave TSC’s payroll by the end of December, the statement was released.
While many are classroom teachers, others of the departing instructors are school administrators.
But, since teachers protested a chaotic replacement process in the previous fiscal year, people will be interested in how the Commission handles the teacher replacements next year.
In September 2023, the Treasury gave TSC a budget of Sh 2.5 billion to hire and replace 6,000 teachers.
Nevertheless, the Commission did not make the openings public; instead, it quietly assigned the positions to MPs and politicians to serve their areas.
Some educators gave up as much as Sh400,000 in order to find work. Although there was little merit to the replacements, corruption and cronyism continued.
This is thought to be an attempt by Kenya Kwanza to give lawmakers incentives for supporting its cause.
TSC reverted to its gloomy past, when politicians meddled in Commission operations, such as the high levels of prejudice and corruption in teacher hiring.
Some of the teachers were hired on pensionable, permanent positions without completing an internship.
The Cabinet Secretary for Education at the time, Ezekiel Machogu, was in charge of the backdoor teacher recruitment.
Machogu was caught on camera giving teachers employment letters during a Kisii County event. A number of employment letters belonging to another politician, Sylvanus Osoro, were discovered in his home.
When Kenyan youth, known as Gen Z, protested poor administration, the president fired his cabinet, which included former chief secretary Ezekiel Machogu.
TSC states that before being hired on a permanent basis, instructors must first complete a minimum of one year of internship.
The one-year Teacher Internship Program is designed to prepare and maintain the skills of those entering the teaching profession.
Through coaching, mentoring, and exposure to real-world teaching situations, the initiative arranges for jobless registered instructors to be placed in educational institutions.
Most current intern teachers have been with the company for two years, although the internship will last for twelve months.
A teacher internship is not a paid position. Nonetheless, interns affiliated with junior secondary institutions will be entitled to a Kshs. 20,000/= monthly stipend.
The stipend will be given after statutory deductions such as the Housing Levy, NSSF, and NHIF, if any.
A certificate will be given to teacher interns who successfully complete the internship program.
Twenty thousand teachers for junior secondary school internships were hired by TSC last month. January will see the teachers assigned to schools.
46,000 teachers who were previously employed on internship terms have been confirmed to be on PNP terms and will begin working on new terms in January 2025.
TSC will employ 6,000 replacement slots, according to Nancy Macharia.
